What is a Certified Attorney Specialist?

As the medical profession has done for decades, the legal profession is now designating attorneys who have distinguished themselves in a certain area of practice as "Certified Specialists." Under Ohio law, only an attorney who has officially attained such a certification can call himself or herself a "specialist" in a field. The attorney must demonstrate a "...substantial and continuing involvement in a particular field of law...passed a written examination...and earned every three years a minimum of 36 hours of continuing legal education [CLE] in the specialty area." Ohio State Bar Association's pamphlet on Certified Attorney Specialists (available at no cost from our office upon request).

As of January 1, 2010, there are only 158 attorneys in the entire state of Ohio that have been certified as Specialists in Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law.
